Nation on Film
I didn’t realise that the BBC had this fab archive some of which I presume is culled form the excellent North West Film Archive. My family worked in the mills around Burnley [which did more spinning than weaving] and while these films are nostalgic [the olden days were always better weren’t they?] they also show the biting reality of mill life. Now Colne and Burnley have lots of retail parks for footloose companies picking up on grants and cheap labour [through a spatial division of labour]. Where once was factories now you have Matalan. And loads of cheap booze shops. Depressing.
